General Dentistry

General dentistry encompasses all of the dentistry needed to keep every member of your family healthy and smiling. Our dentists and staff provide gentle and personalised dentistry that will put you at ease.

Active Maintenance Programme (Preventive Dentistry)

Routine care of your teeth is the only way to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy and that you maintain that beautiful smile.

We believe that early disease detection is critical in order for our patients to maintain optimum oral health. We encourage all of our patients to have regular dental check-ups, which enable us to minimise treatment and maintenance procedures. Together, we help you maintain your optimal dental health with regular active maintenance appointments at an interval determined by your dentist especially for you.

These active maintenance appointments include:

  • Check-up and clean
  • X-rays to assist with diagnosis
  • Fluoride and sealants (as needed)

Some patients achieve excellent oral health with twice-yearly visits, while others may require more frequent visits to keep their smiles looking and feeling their best. Certain conditions, diseases and habits may make keeping your teeth and gums healthy more challenging. We are here to support you based on your individual needs.

We welcome new patients and will look after your family in the same way that we would want ours cared for.

Periodontal (Gum) Treatments

Recent research links this inflammatory disease to systemic conditions including:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Respiratory illnesses
  • Low birth weight and premature births
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Certain types of cancer – especially in ageing women

We take a proactive approach to restoring health by providing gentle, yet thorough, dental cleanings to remove tartar and bacteria both above and below the gumline. Depending on each patient’s unique needs, this may require more than one visit.

Starting out with a fresh, clean smile will assist in healing gums and eradicating infection comfortably and in tandem with improved home care.

Tooth-Coloured Restorative Dentistry

When decay, cracked teeth, wear or trauma causes damage to teeth, both Dr Richard Beale and Dr Louisa Cullen will repair your existing teeth, whenever possible, using highly aesthetic, tooth-coloured restorations.

Advancements in materials and techniques preserve the beauty and health of your smile.

Tooth-Replacement Options

Extraction is a last resort when all other treatment options are impossible. In spite of our best intentions, tooth loss sometimes occurs, but it does not have to mean a compromised smile.

  • Dental implants
  • Partial dentures
  • Complete dentures
  • Fixed bridges
  • Implant-retained dentures and bridges

We are happy to present all of your tooth-replacement options and the benefits of each to help you make an informed choice for the future of your smile.

Emergency Dentistry

Dental emergencies can disrupt your day, causing you to miss work or important appointments. We strive to treat dental emergencies fast – usually on the same day – and will provide you with treatment options to help you avoid them in the future.

  • Root canals
  • Extractions
  • Palliative care

We invite you to get in touch to arrange your next dental exam at Beale & Cullen Dental, located on Papanui Road in Christchurch. We look forward to welcoming you.

Frequently Asked Questions

We suggest brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day using proper technique.

  • Be sure to brush all surfaces of teeth
  • Angle toothbrush toward the gumline
  • Use gentle pressure – the bristle tips do the cleaning
  • Replace toothbrush every three months or earlier if it looks worn

While an electric toothbrush is not necessary to keep teeth clean, it sure makes it easier. Not only does it vibrate at a high speed, scrubbing away plaque and food particles, it also comes with a handy timer letting you know you have reached the two-minute mark.

Brushing alone is not enough. You need to clean between your teeth where the toothbrush doesn't reach at least once a day using floss or the correct size interdental brush – a nifty little brush perfect for cleaning in hard-to-reach spots.

Flossing your teeth not only helps to keep your teeth clean, but it also maintains your periodontal health by removing bacteria just beneath the gumline.

For patients with crowded teeth, waxed floss or dental tape makes it easier to floss without fraying. For patients with spaces between teeth, braided or woven floss will help you remove more plaque.

If you want to discuss products or need a refresher on home hygiene, we are always happy to demonstrate so that you get the most out of your home oral care.

Generally, we recommend a dental check-up and clean every six months so your dentist can help you keep your teeth and gums healthy and pick up any issues in the early stages before they become big issues.

Just because you don't feel any discomfort doesn't mean there's not something going on. Dental decay and gum disease usually don't give any symptoms until they are well advanced. Advanced diagnostics using digital dental x-rays makes it easier to detect conditions early, potentially saving you time and money over the course of your lifetime.

Some people, especially those with gum disease, may need to be seen as often as every three months. We always recommend treatment based on your needs and never treat something as important as your health with a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we spend time getting to know you and your goals for your smile. We also present any issues we see along with all treatment options, respecting that different people require different solutions.

We will advise you of what is the right interval between visits for you and maintain diligence to protect your oral and overall health by looking after your smile.

Has it been a while since your last dental appointment? You will not find any guilt or judgement here. We are here to help you regain your confidence and your smile.

We know most people are a little anxious before going to the dentist, but for some people, this fear can be so debilitating that it causes them to leave a very long time between visits. Please be honest and tell us about your fears. We want to know if you have had a previous bad experience, and often just talking about it and realising that we understand and are here to help you can be a very powerful first step in moving past it and helping you on the road to great dental health.

One of our most significant rewards is when patients who came to us initially with a genuine fear of the dentist tell us they now look forward to their dental visits!

It’s easy to say we are kind and compassionate, but you will only know we truly believe in respecting and delighting our patients when you make your first dental appointment with us. You will never be just a smile to us. Instead, we will treat you with a whole-person approach, caring for your emotional experience and your dental experience equally.

Our goal is for every experience you have with us to be exceptional! Contact our Christchurch dental practice and take the first step toward a smile you feel proud to show off.

Our dentists would never tell off a patient. We'll be delighted you've made an appointment and taken the first step to healthy teeth and gums.

Patients avoid the dental clinic for many personal reasons – finances, anxiety and busy schedules are all competing with dental visits. Our friendly and compassionate team recognises what a big step it can be to make an appointment with the dentist.

Here is what you can expect when you come to Beale & Cullen Dental:

  • A warm welcome
  • A full medical history and other necessary forms
  • Dedicated time to get to know our team
  • Plenty of time to discuss your concerns
  • A comprehensive exam of your teeth, gums and bite
  • An oral cancer screening
  • X-rays with digital technology
  • A treatment consultation

How Do I Choose the Right Toothbrush?

What's the best toothbrush...it's so confusing!

Choosing a toothbrush at the supermarket can be very overwhelming! There are hard ones and soft ones, charcoal and whitening ones and very large ones and teeny tiny ones! Remember plaque on your teeth is very soft and only requires a very soft brush to remove it. Medium and hard toothbrushes may cause damage to your healthy gums causing gums to recede and teeth to become sensitive.
